1916 : The plight of Verdun ends


The Battle of Verdun, which lasted ten months, expires December 15, 1916 not without difficulty. No other battle has so marked the memory of the French. In France there are no less than 379 000 dead, wounded and missing against 335 000 for Germany. This unfortunate event will remain the deadliest of the First World War after the Battle of the Somme.

1962 : Conviction of Adolf Eichmann


Adolf Eichmann who was charged in 1941 by the Nazi regime to eliminate the Jews, was sentenced Dec. 15, 1962 to be hanged for war crimes. The former SS colonel was kidnapped in Argentina in May 1960 to be held in Jerusalem.

1989 : End of the dictatorship in Chile


The victory of Patricio Aylwin, the first democratic elections since 1973 ended the dictatorship.

1991 : Sinking of the Salem Express in the Red Sea


The Salem Express ferry Egyptian, sank in the Red Sea, off Safagua, after hitting a coral reef in an area infested with sharks. This catastrophe counts 471 dead, most of them was pilgrims.

2000 : Closure of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant


14 years after the explosion of a reactor that contaminated three quarters of Europe, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant permanently closes. Despite this it will unfortunately remain a threat for decades to come.

2001 : Reopening of the Tower of Pisa


After eleven years of work of avoiding the collapse of the Tower of Pisa, it re-opens its doors to the public.
