1919 : Beginning of the Prohibition


On January 16, 1919, the manufacture, sale and transportation of alcoholic beverages are prohibited throughout the United States after the ratification of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

1942 : Carole Lombard died in a plane crash


On December 16, 1942, American actress Carole Lombard, star of Hollywood comedies, died in a plane crash while she was touring the country to support the war effort. Her husband, Clark Gable, inconsolable, joined the U.S. Army Air Forces until the end of the war.

1979 : The Shah of Iran fled his country


On 16 January 1979, the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, who headed the country since 1941, fled his country following the violent and huge protests against his regime, a revolution that leaded to the creation of an Islamic Republic.

1995 : 2 buses are swept away by avalanches in Kashmir


On January 16, 1995, two buses were swept away by avalanches caused by very heavy snow on the highway between Srinagar and Jammu, in Kashmir, at the foot of the Himalayas. Between January 16 and 20, avalanches caused the death of 200 people on that road.

2003 : Space Shuttle Columbia


On January 16, 2003, Space Shuttle Columbia was launched on its 28th and final mission. It exploded when it re-entered the atmosphere on 1 February 2003, killing all seven crew members.

2006 : Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf's inauguration


On January 16, 2005, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf took office as President of Liberia. She is the first woman elected to head an African country.
