1881 : Jules Ferry Laws


On June 16, 1881, one of Jules Ferry laws creates free public education for all. The following year, primary education is compulsory and public education is non-religious. The goal is to alphabetize the French who are not as educated as their European neighbors, strengthen the Republic and secularity and to impose French on the whole territory at the expense of regional languages.

1896 : A tsunami devastated the coasts of Japan


On the night of 15 to 16 June 1896, a tsunami following an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 that occurred at nearly 200km from the coast of the island of Honshu in Japan, reached the northeastern coast of the island. Waves up to 35 meters destroyed entire villages such as Kamaishi. Between 20,000 and 27,000 people were killed. The same area was hit by a tsunami following the earthquake of March 11, 2011.

1958 : Hungarian leader Imre Nagy executed


On June 16, 1958, former Prime Minister Imre Nagy was executed by the authorities in his country after a sham trial.
Having been the architect of reforms that had not been endorsed by Moscow in the early 50s, he was expelled from the Communist Party. He was recalled during the popular uprising of 1956. He left the Warsaw Pact, and chose parliamentary democracy and neutrality.
However, one of his ministers, János Kádár formed a conter-government and ask the Soviet army to intervene. On November 4th 1956, 2500 tanks and 200,000 Soviet troops entered Hungary and suppressed the uprising. Thousands of civilians were killed. Imre Nagy was arrested, deported and eventually executed two years later.

1961 : Nureyev defects


On June 16, 1961, Soviet Kirov ballet dancer prodigy, Rudolf Nureyev defected in Paris while his company was leaving the country. It was a blow to the Soviet government which was spreading propaganda about artistic freedom in Russia. Nureyev continued his career in England, the United States and Paris and is one of the greatest dancers and choreographers in the history of dance.

1963 : First woman in space


On June 16, 1963, Valentina Tereshkova, a young Russian cosmonaut, became the first woman to travel in space. Aboard Vostok 6, she made 48 orbits around the earth between 16 and 19 June 1963.

1972 : A tunnel collapsed in Vierzy


On June 16, 1972, the railway tunnel collapsed in Vierzy (Aisne) on two railcars. 108 people were killed and 111 injured. The accident was due to the vibrations of trains in a old tunnel which was at that time being renovated.

2010 : Catastrophic flood in the Var


On 15 and 16 June 2010, torrential rains caused floods in the region of Draguignan, Var. 25 people were killed and damage totaled nearly one billion euros.
