1972 : Coup attempt against the king of Morocco


On August 16, 1972, the plane carrying the King of Morocco, Hassan II, was attacked briefly by Royal Moroccan Air Force during a coup attempt against his autocratic rule. Hassan II survived the attack and remained in power until his death in 1999.

1977 : Elvis Presley dies


On August 16, 1977, the pop music icon, Elvis Presley, died of a heart attack at his home in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 42 years old. He had become addicted to barbiturates and had lived in near seclusion for 2 years.

1987 : A plane crashes on a highway in Detroit


On August 16, 1987, a DC-9 belonging to the Northwest Company crashed shortly after takeoff on a highway near Detroit, Michigan. 154 people on the plane and two people on the highway were killed. A four-year old passenger was the only survivor. The pilots had forgotten to put the wing flaps prior to takeoff.

2005 : Plane crash in Venezuela


On 16 August 2005, West Caribbean Flight 708 from Panama to Fort-de-France crashed in the mountains of Venezuela killing all 160 passengers and crew members. The plane was carrying mostly tourists from Martinique returning from a holiday in Panama. The crash was due to overloading of the aircraft, a wing icing, a loss of speed that led to the stall point...

2009 : Usain Bolt improves his own 100m world record


On August 16, 2009, during the World Championships in Berlin, the Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt lowered the 100m world record he had established himself at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 (9s69), with a time of 9s 58.
