1993 : Neptune sank near Haiti


On February 17, 1993, the ferry Neptune,carrying 1,200 people - 2 times the maximum allowed - overturned near Port-au-Prince in Haiti. The vessel had neither lifeboats nor emergency gear. 900 people drowned.

2006 : Mudslide in the Philippines


On February 17, 2006, a mudslide buried the village of Guinsaugonin in the province of Southern Leyte in the Philippines. 1100 people were killed and among them nearly 250 children who were in the local elementary school.
