On March 17, 1905, Franklin D. Roosevelt married a distant cousin, Eleanor Roosevelt, in New York. President Theodore Roosevelt attended the ceremony.

1931 : Nevada legalizes gambling

1966 : Missin nuclear bomb found


On 17 March 1966, the submersible Alvin located the missing hydrogen bomb, lost by an American B52 bomber at 2500 feet depth off the coast of Spain.

1969 : Golda Meir became Prime Minister


On March 17, 1969, Golda Meir became Prime Minister of Israel. She was the first woman to hold this position. She was also a signatory of the declaration of independence in 1948.

1992 : South African apartheid referendum


On 17 March 1992, a referendum is held in South Africa which ask the white minority if they supported the process of reforms in order to end apartheid. They answered yes to a majority of 68.73%.

2004 : Unrest in Kosovo


On March 17, 2004, unrest broke out in the province of Kosovo in former Yugoslavia, administered by the United Nations, when, because of rising ethnic tensions, thousands of Kosovo Albanians attacked the Serb minority.
