1961 : Bay of Pigs


On April 17, 1961, a group of Cuban exiles in the U.S. and trained by CIA invaded at Bay of Pigs in Cuba to overthrow the government of Fidel Castro. Alerted by the KGB, the Cuban government arrested 100,000 people suspected of being allied to the cause of the invaders in order to cut all support for them and the invasion was a failure.

1969 : Conviction of the assassin of Robert Kennedy


On April 17, 1969, Sirhan B. Sirhan was convicted of the murder of Senator Robert Kennedy, brother of assassinated President John F. Kennedy. The young Palestinian, apparently committed the murder under the influence of alcohol, because of the senator's support to Israel during the 6 Day War, which began just a year before.

1970 : Apollo 13


On April 17, 1970, the spacecraft Apollo 13, which had suffered an explosion two days earlier as it neared the moon, successfully returned to earth and landed in the Pacific Ocean.

1975 : the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh


On April 17, 1975, the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh, ending the Khmer Republic and the Civil War. The new government, led by Pol Pot, created the Democratic Kampuchea and set up one of the most murderous political regimes of all time based on starvation, torture, forced labor and mass murder.

1986 : Three Hundred and Thirty Five Years' War


On April 17, 1986, the war which began on March 30, 1651 between the Netherlands and the Isles of Scilly, south west of England ended with a peace declaration. No shots were fired during the entire duration of the war.

1986 : John McCarthy kidnapped in Beirut


The 16 or April 17, 1986, the British journalist John McCarthy was kidnapped in Beirut. He remained a prisoner five years.
