1944 : Explosion at Port Chicago


On 17 July 1944, a ship loaded with ammunition exploded in Port Chicago, California, causing other explosions in the nearby ships. The entire site was destroyed and 332 people were killed. Safety rules in those days were almost non-existent and the staff were very poorly trained.

1945 : Beginning of the Potsdam Conference


On July 17, 1945, U.S. President Harry S. Truman, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met in Potsdam near Berlin to discuss the problems in postwar Europe and the end of the conflict in Japan.

1955 : Disneyland opens in California


On July 17, 1955, Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California. The site was not quite ready and many people managed to enter uninvited. Despite a difficult start, the park had a great success and encouraged the construction of Disney World in Florida, ten years later.

1996 : A Boeing 747 explodes shortly after takeoff from New York


On 17 July 1996, a TWA Boeing 747 jetliner bound for Paris exploded shortly after takeoff from Kennedy International Airport in New York. Witnesses thought they saw the launch of a missile shortly before the explosion. After investigation, it appeared that the aircraft suffered a mechanical failure and was not shot by the Navy training nearby.
