1931 : Al Capone sentenced to 11 years in prison


On October 17, 1931, gangster Al Capone was sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion. Capone was the head of a criminal organization whose activities ranged from smuggling alcohol to illegal gambling through prostitution. Federal agents led by Elliot Ness often broke up in the Capone's alcohol-smuggling but it was the fact that Capone did not declare his income that led them to succeed in sending him to prison.

1961 : Massacre of 17 October in Paris


On October 17, 1961, the police led by Maurice Papon massacred more than 200 Algerian civilians during a protest challenging the curfew imposed after bombings in Paris. Police began the slaughter in ghettos before attacking the demonstrators. No police officer was condemned for these abuses. Collaborator with the Nazis during the 2nd World War, Maurice Papon was convicted in 1998 for complicity in crimes against humanity.

1968 : Black-power salute durin a medals ceremony


On 17 October 1968, at the Olympic Games in Mexico City, during the 200-meter medals ceremony, American athletes Tommie Smith (gold medalist) and John Carlos (bronze medalist) raised their fists in a black-power salute throughout the United States anthem. Their medals were removed and they were expelled from the Games.

1989 : Earthquake in San Francisco


On October 17, 1989, an earthquake of moment magnitude 7.1 struck the city of San Francisco, just before a baseball game broadcast nationwide. The 15 seconds of the earthquake were followed live by millions of viewers. 63 people were killed and 3,000 injured during the earthquake and 100,000 buildings were damaged.
