1906 : Earthquake in San Francisco


On 18 April 1906, an earthquake strucked the city of San Francisco, California. Much of the city was destroyed and 300 people were killed. The earthquake led to a series of fires which spread throughout the city.

1955 : Albert Einstein


On 18 April 1955, the famous physicist and Nobel laureate Albert Einstein died at the age of 76.

1956 : Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier III of Monaco


On 18 April 1956, the American actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier of Monaco at the Palace of Monaco. Alfred Hitchcock was her best man.

1983 : Suicide bombing against the U.S. embassy in Beirut


On April 18, 1983, a truck containing 500kg of explosives strucked the U.S. embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. The attack was claimed by Hezbollah, and killed 63 people.

1996 : Greek tourists killed in Cairo


On April 18, 1996, gunmen fired on a group of Greek tourists, outside the Europa Hotel in Cairo, Egypt. The Islamic group al-Gamaa al-Islamiya claimed the attack, stating that they thought they were Israeli tourists.

2007 : Nearly 200 died in bomb attacks in Iraq


On April 18, 2007, a series of bombs exploded in Baghdad killing nearly 200 people. It had been the bloodiest day since U.S. troops invaded in 2003.
