1974 : India tests nuclear bomb


On May 18 1974, India successfully detonated its first A nuclear bomb in the Rajasthan desert. This was the first non-permanent member of UN Security Council UN to obtain nuclear weapons.

1980 : Eruption of Mount St. Helens


On the morning of May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted.
First, an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 shook the entire region.
Then a whole section of the volcano collapsed in a massive landslide of rocks and ice, sweeping everything in its path. Immediately afterwards, a huge gas explosion blew everything in the region : 10 million trees lied on the ground.
340 km2 were devastated by the eruption and 57 people lost their lives.

2001 : Shrek released


On May 18 2001, movie studio DreamWorks released the animated film Shrek, which revisited fairy tales in a subversive way and in which the romantic hero was an ogre. The voice of Shrek was played by Mike Myers, Fiona's voice was Cameron Diaz's, Donkey was performed by Eddie Murphy and Lord Farquaad by John Lithgow. The film competed at the Cannes Festival where it did not win any prize but gained high popularity .
The three films of the series were among the biggest box office successes.

May 18 is the Battle of Las Piedras Day in Uruguay, which commemorates the first victory of Uruguayan independence forces against the Spanish on May 18, 1811. Nevertheless, Uruguay did not become independent until 1828, having meanwhile been annexed to Brazil by the Portuguese.
