1916 : End of the Battle of the Somme


On November 18, 1916, British general Douglas Haig ended the Battle of the Somme, after more than four months of slaughter. The Battle of the Somme is one of the greatest military disasters in human history : 600,000 French and English soldiers and 650,000 German soldiers lost their lives during the battle.

1978 : Mass suicide in Guyana


On November 18, 1978, the leader of the People's Temple cult organized a mass suicide of his followers in Jonestown in Guyana. People who did not want to commit suicide were murdered. 913 people died that day.

1987 : Fire in the London Underground


On November 18, 1987, a fire broke out in the London Underground under an escalator. The fire spread quickly and the smoke prevented people to escape. 31 people including a firefighter were killed.

1991 : British hostage Terry Waite is freed


On November 18, 1991, Terry Waite, a hostage of Hezbollah in Lebanon was liberated as welle as the American educator Thomas Sutherland, through the efforts of the United Nations. Terry Waite had been sent by the Archbishop of Canterbury in Lebanon to negotiate the release of hostages when he was kidnapped in Beirut on January 20, 1987. Many Western hostages have been held by Hezbollah in Lebanon between 1982 and 1992 to avoid reprisal after the attacks against French and American forces in 1982.

Independance Day in Latvia
November 18 is Independence Day in Latvia, which celebrates its declaration of independence on 18 November 1918 which was recognized in 1922. During the second World War, Latvia was invaded by the Soviet Union and then by Germany. It will end up under Soviet control at the end of the war and remained so until 1991.
