Tip of the Day : 19 May

Protocol to talk to an emperor

If you still intend to visit Japan, you may find yourself invited, you never know, by the Emperor of Japan.
In this case, it is a good thing to respect the cultural practices of the country.
Firstly, you should avoid arriving wearing flip-flop and shorts : you could shock the staff and they may throw you out. You must instead dress as it is indicated in the invitation.
Once in the presence of the emperor, you will need to bow from your waist and not rush on him to shake his hand and hit him in the back.
You should not speak until he had spoken to you. To address him, do not call him by his firstname : you have to call him Your Imperial Majesty.
If you do not know what to say, do not ask him for news of his family. Instead, you may talk about the event that has brought you in front of him, for example.
Try to follow these guidelines if you do not want to cause a diplomatic incident that could endanger our supply in electronic components.
