1907 : Explosion in a mine in Pennsylvania


On December 19, 1907, a very violent explosion occurred in a coal mine in Pennsylvania. The mine, which was more than 3 km depth collapsed and 239 miners were killed.

1984 : Signature of the agreement for the return of Hong Kong to China


On 19 December 1984, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang signed the historic agreement to return Hong Kong to China in 1997. China accepted the principle of one country, two systems to enable Hong Kong to retain its capitalist economic system and its existing rights and freedoms.

1986 : Gorbachev released Sakharov


On December 19, 1986, pursuant to its policy of political openness, the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev released from his exile in Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod) the dissident and physicist Andrei Sakharov and his wife Elena Bonner. Sakharov was exiled in 1980 following his severe criticism of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

1997 : Release of the movie Titanic


On December 19, 1997 was released the most expensive film in cinema history up to that date, Titanic, written and directed by James Cameron. The movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet and with breathtaking special effects won 11 Academy Awards.
