1789 : Oath of the Jeu de paume


On June 20, 1789, when the king asked that guards prevented them from entering the room where the general statements were standing to counter their commitment to reforms, the deputies of the Third State met in the Jeu de Paume room in Versailles and made an oath not to separate and to meet wherever circumstances require, until a constitution is established.
This was the beginning of the French Revolution.

1963 : The red phone is installed


On June 20th, 1963, to reduce the risk of nuclear war by accident or misunderstanding, a special telephone line was installed between the White House and the Kremlin. This was a first step to relax the relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union after the Cuban missile crisis which ended with the acceptance by Khrushchev not to install missiles in Cuba and the acceptance by the United States not to undermine the sovereignty of Cuba.

1975 : Jaws released


On June 20, 1975, the Steven Spielberg film The Jaws was released in theaters in the United States. While Universal Studios had thought to end the project when the budget was increased from $4 to $8 million, the film brought in $450 million.
This was the story of a series of white shark attacks on a small island resort, Amity Island. The main roles were played by Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss, Robert Shaw and Bruce, a very realistic mechanical shark .

2002 : A gas explosion killed 111 miners in China


On June 20, 2002, a gas explosion killed 111 miners in a coal mine in China. Although not reported even in Chinese media, these explosions are fairly common in China, where safety rules are far from international standards.
