1942 : Allies surrendered in Tobruk


On June 21, 1942, Erwin Rommel and his Afrika Korps took control of the Libyan port of Tobruk held by the Allies who had themselves taken it from the Italians.
30,000 soldiers were taken prisoners and Rommel won his marshal's baton.

1943 : Jean Moulin arrested in Caluire


On June 21, 1943, the head of the French Resistance, Jean Moulin, was arrested in Caluire, near Lyon, in the house of Dr. Dugoujon. Tortured by the Gestapo chief of Lyon, Klaus Barbie, Jean Moulin died during his transfer to Berlin without having spoken.

1964 : The Ku Klux Klan killed three civil rights activists with the help of a sheriff


On June 21, 1964, civil rights activists Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney were killed by the Ku Klux Klan in Mississippi. The three men fully committed themselves for registration on the electoral lists and support for the vote of the Blacks in the region. Cecil Price, deputy sheriff and member of the KKK, had them arrested in a futile pretext until the Klan was ready to organize the murders. As the State of Mississippi refused to prosecute the killers, the FBI had to do it.

1990 : Earthquake in Iran


On June 21, 1990, at night, an earthquake of moment magnitude 7.7 struck northwestern Iran. 50,000 people were killed and the affected area was immense. The next day, a replica burst a dam, further increasing the number of homeless.
