1927 : Earthquake in China


On 22 May 1937, an earthquake of moment magnitude 9.7 hit the region of Xining in the center of China. This was one of the deadliest in history: 200,000 people were killed. Xining region is a zone of convergence between Indian and Eurasian plates.

1960 : Earthquake in Chile


On 22 May 1960, an earthquake of moment magnitude 9.5 hit the region of Valdivia, Chile. Another earthquake of magnitude 7.9 had occurred the previous day in another province of southern Chile. The whole area of Valdivia was destroyed by the earthquake and the tsunami that follows. Waves up to 25 m high destroyed several villages. The coast of Chile was changed, volcanoes were waking ... The death toll reached more than 3,000 deaths including in Japan and Hawaii where waves up to 10 m ravaged the coasts.

1967 : Fire in a department store in Belgium


On May 22, 1967, a short circuit occurred during the inauguration of a department store in Brussels. Since there was no fire alarm and little fire extinguishers, fire spread quickly before people could leave the store. 322 people were killed, mostly for smoke inhalation.

1968 : A submarine sinks


On May 22, 1968, the nuclear submarine USS Scorpion sank off the Azores. It was carrying 99 sailors and two nuclear bombs.

1990 : Reunification of the 2 Yemen


On May 22 1990, Southern Yemen and North Yemen united to form the Republic of Yemen.

2004 : Fahrenheit 9 / 11 wins Palme d'Or


On May 22, 2004, the President of the Cannes Jury Quentin Tarantino announced that Fahrenheit 9 / 11, Michael Moore's documentary, won the Palme d'Or. The film was highly acclaimed when it was presented and was a great success at the box office, including in the United States where it was very controversial for its criticism of President George W Bush's administration.
