Take care of newborn kittens

If you end up with a newborn kitten whose mother can not or will not take car of, here are some advices given by associations for the protection of animals.

We begin by installing a soft bed for the kitten : a box (not too small) with towels. A kitten is not able to regulate its temperature, we must continually keep him warm. We can add a hot water bottle with warm (not hot) water, and change it regularly. It is better to also put it in a corner of the nest so that the animal can move away if he feels too hot.

Until the age of 3 weeks, a kitten should be fed every two hours with milk replacer that can be found in a vet practice and in some pet stores. We also need nursing bottles.
From 3 weeks, the kitten should eat 4-6 times a day and we can begin to gradually give him milk in a bowl and some kitten food.
Between 1 month and a half and three months, the kitten has to eat four times a day and we gradually wean him off the milk replacer.
From 3 months, the kitten does not eat more than 3 times a day.

Regarding cleanliness, we must also imitate the behavior of a mother cat. We must carry the newborn kitten in the bathroom after each meal and encourage elimination with a paper towel dampened with warm water around urinary and anal areas .
After 2 or 3 weeks, the kitten will not need help. After a month, we can install a litter and place the kitten after each meal. Then we should gently take his paw and show him that he must scratch with it.

After each meal, you should also clean the kitten with a paper towel dampened with warm water until he washes alone.

We should not handle newborn kitten too often but after two weeks, we can begin to hold him more frequently to socialize him.
However, it is better to keep him away from other animals (including rude children) so that he would not be hurt. This also prevents the spread of disease, in one way or the other.

If there is any symptom of disease or if the kitten does not eat, he must be rushed to a veterinarian.
