1718 : End of Blackbeard

On November 22, 1718, Edward Teach, better known by the name of Blackbeard, was killed by the British off North Carolina. Blackbeard was one of the fiercest and famous pirates of the Caribbean and American coast.

1950 : Train crash in New York

On November 22, 1950, in New York, a stationary train failed to restart due to locked wheels. The fire was green, the next train arrived behind, unable to stop in time and strucked the first train from behind. 79 people were killed and 363 others were injured.

1963 : President John F. Kennedy is assassinated

On 22 November 1963, at 12:30 p.m., President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas while sitting in an open car with his wife and Texas Governor John Connally. Vice President Johnson became the 36th President of the United States a few hours later. His assassin Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested shortly after and killed the following day by Jack Ruby, an operator of dance halls with links to organized crime. Kennedy was the fourth U.S. president to be assassinated. There have been also attempted murders on many other presidents. Hundreds of thousands of people and the leaders of 99 countries followed the President Kennedy's funeral on November 25, declared day of national mourning.

1990 : Margaret Thatcher resigned

On November 22, 1990, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, nicknamed the Iron Lady, resigned after 11 years in power. Her regime was marked by her hard management of the strikes in the mines, privatizations, the Falklands War, detente with the Soviet Union and an uncompromising attitude towards Northern Ireland.

2005 : Angela Merkel becomes German Chancellor

On November 22, 2005, Angela Merkel, who headed the CDU, became German Chancellor. She was the first woman to hold this position.
