1701 : Captain Kidd hanged by the British


On May 23, 1701, the famous Scottish privateer William Captain Kidd is hanged for piracy by the English authorities.
The privateer was wanted for piracy for having taken a ship whose captain was English. Since the ship was sailing under a French pass, Captain Kidd tried to defend his honor and gave himself up to British authorities in New York. The British brought him to England and condemned him for piracy for political reasons.

1934 : Bonnie and Clyde shot by police


On 23 May 1934, the famous outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were shot by police in Louisiana where they were hiding, after many armed robberies, alone or with accomplices.
Even if they killed 13 people, they are still seen today as Robin-Hood-like romantic figures.
Their life inspired of a film by Arthur Penn in 1967 with Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty.

1937 : John D. Rockefeller dies


On May 23, 1937, the oil magnate and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller died at the age of 97. After starting as a clerk he became the richest man in the world and then spent the last 30 years of his life to redistribute a large portion of his fortune.

1949 : Creation of Federal Republic of Germany


On May 23, 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany, better known until the reunification of Germany under the name of West Germany, is created on the areas controlled by the United States, the United Kingdom and France after WW2. In reaction, the Soviet Union established the German Democratic Republic, known by the name of East Germany, in October 1949, in the area it controls.

1960 : Eichmann captured by the Israelis


On 23 May 1960, Israeli Prime Minister announced capture of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann by the secret service of his country, in Argentina, on May 11. Eichmann was one of the main organizers of the final solution of the Jewish question during the Nazi regime.

1960 : Tsunami hits Hawaii


On May 23, 1960, the tsunami caused by the earthquake of moment magnitude 9.5 in Chile the previous day, hit the coasts of Hawaii, having propagated over the Pacific Ocean at speeds of over 640km/h. Despite the warnings, 61 people were killed by waves of up to 10m high.
