1926 : Rudolph Valentino dies


On August 23, 1926, actor Rudolph Valentino died from a ruptured ulcer. He was only 31. During his short career, he became the first male sex symbol and millions of women idolized him. 100,000 people attended his funeral.

1927 : Sacco and Vanzetti execution


On 23 August 1927, two Italian anarchists, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti are executed for murder by the state of Massachusetts, despite the lack of evidence linking them to the crimes.

1939 : Signing of Nazi-Soviet pact


On August 23, 1939, the Germans and the Soviets signed a non-aggression pact. The pact also provided for a sharing of territories in Eastern Europe. The goal for the Soviet Union was to save time, according to Foreign Minister Molotov. The goal was for Germany to accumulate raw materials, traded with the Russians, and have more resources to attack the West, according to the German Foreign Minister Ribbentrop. The pact was broken on June 22, 1941.

2006 : Natascha Kampusch escaped


On August 23, 2006, a 18-year old young Austrian, Natascha Kampusch managed to escape her kidnapper after eight years of captivity. She was abducted on the way to school when she was 10.
