1888 : Van Gogh cuts off his ear


While he is at Arles with his friend Gauguin, and suffering from depression, the painter Vincent Van Gogh cuts off his left ear lobe with a razor.

1947 : Invention of the transistor


The Bell Telephone searchers, americans John Bardeen, William Shockley and Walter Brattain invented the transistor on December 23th 1947.
This invention won them the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1956.

1966 : Mirage F1 made its first flight


The Mirage F1, made by Dassault, made its first flight Dec. 23th, 1966.

1982 : A city evacuated due to dioxin contamination


On December 23, 1982, U.S. health authorities announced to the people of Times Beach, Missouri, they must definitely leave the city due to contamination of the streets with dioxin. The streets were constantly invaded by dust because they were not paved or tarred and City Hall had the idea to ask a waste company to spray the streets with oil. The company then sprayed engine oil in all the streets. With this oil was mixed with toxic dioxin so that people fell ill and therefore the city had to be evacuated. The federal and state governments also had to buy all the houses in the city, before destroying it.
