1859 : Publication of the Origin of Species


On November 24, 1859, English naturalist Charles Darwin published a book on his theory of evolution of species: On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. Inspired by the work of his grandfather and the French naturalist Lamarck, his work has expanded particularly after trips to the Galapagos Islands and New Zealand. The publication of his work was immediately a great success, particularly among scientists who found many answers to their questions. He published his theory on the evolution of man in 1871. Darwin's work was quickly accepted by the public, outside of Christian extremists.

1950 : Big storm in the Appalachians


On November 24, 1950, a great storm began in the Appalachians that lasted until November 30. Blizzard, heavy snow and rain and strong winds marked the storm due to a hurricane which hit 22 states in the eastern United States, killed 353 people and left 1 million people without electricity.

1963 : Murder of Lee Harvey Oswald


On November 24, 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassin of President Kennedy was shot dead in the basement of police headquarters in Dallas, as he was about to be transferred in front of a crowd of journalists. The gunman, Jack Ruby, a nightclub owner with ties to both organized crime and the Dallas police, said he acted alone, because of the pain the murder of the President had caused him.

1999 : A ferry sank off the coast of China


On 24 November 1999, the Dashun, a ferry making the connection between Yantai and Dalian, sank off the coast of China. A fire had broken out on board while the ship was in a snowstorm and was facing strong winds. Over 300 people were killed, most of cold in ice water or in lifeboats. Only 36 people survived.
