1962 : Release of American prisoners captured during the the Bay of Pigs Operation


After the U.S. government's agreement with Cuba, including payment of a ransom of 53 million, more than 1,000 American prisoners are released on December 24, 1962.

1968 : First men to orbit the moon


On December 24, 1968, Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders on Apollo 8 were the first humans to orbit the moon and see its dark side.

1979 : Launch of the first European rocket Ariane


On 24 December 1979, the European Space Agency launches its first Ariane 1 in Kourou base in French Guiana. Ariane 1 is a a three-stage launcher which measures 48m high and weighs 210 tons.
