1792 : Composition of La Marseillaise


On 25 April 1792, Rouget de Lisle composed the Battle Hymn of the Army of the Rhine at Strasbourg, which was sung first by volonteers from Marseille and which was then renamed "La Marseillaise".
Song became the French national anthem in 1795. After the different anti-revolutionary regimes in the 19th century, it was finally adopted in 1879 and added to the Constitution in 1946.

1953 : Publishing of the discovery of DNA structure


On April 25, 1953, James D. Watson and Francis Crick, 2 biologists from the University of Cambridge in England published in the journal Nature their discovery of the structure on the basis of life: DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid, double helix molecule containing all the genetic material of living organisms.

1974 : Carnation Revolution


On 25 April 1974 the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), a movement of dissident military against dictatorship in Portugal, launched its offensive against the government to restore democracy in the country. Operations are initiated by the song Grândola, Vila Morena passed to the radio. The MFA managed to topple the regime in one day. The name Carnation Revolution is due to one of the gathering places of the revolution in Lisbon: the flower market at the time of the season of carnation flower that some soldiers put in their guns.

2003 : Human Genome Project


On April 25, 2003, the Human Genome Project is completed and is published. It catalog more than 20,000 human genes. The project, international and public, is to make available to the world its knowledge of human DNA that is part of the World Heritage and can not belong to any private company.

2009 : Emergency in swine flu epidemic


On April 25, 2009, Mexican President Calderon declared a state of emergency in his country due to the outbreak of swine flu, a variant of H1N1. All public events were suspended and schools were closed.

ANZAC Day
April 25 is the ANZAC Day (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) that commemorates the Battle of Gallipoli, in the Ottoman Empire, during which over 8,000 soldiers of this coprs have been killed. During the battle for control of the Sea of Marmara, also called Battle of the Dardanelles, which lasted from February 1915 to January 1916, between the Franco-British forces reinforced by the ANZAC and the Ottoman Empire troops, the losses in human lives had been immense. The ANZAC had landed on April 25, 1915 at Gallipoli.

April 25 is the a national day commemorating the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974 which ended the military dictatorship in Portugal.
