1896 : Nicholas II becomes Tsar


On 26 May 1896, after the death of his father Alexander III, Nicholas II was crowned Tsar of all Russias. He remained tsar until the Russian Revolution of 1917.

1897 : Dracula arrived in bookstores


On 26 May 1897, the novel by Irish writer Bram Stoker, Dracula, arrived in bookstores in London. The story of a Transylvanian vampire, Count Dracula was not a phenomenal success at its release but was worship in the twentieth century.

1940 : Beginning of the evacuation of Allied troops at Dunkirk


On May 26, 1940, the British began the evacuation of British, French and Belgian soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk where they were trapped. Given the number of people to evacuate, all boats in a state of floating were requisitioned by the authorities to carry out this operation, called Operation Dynamo. Between May 26 and June 3, nearly 340,000 soldiers were evacuated.

1991 : An austrian plane crashed in Thailand


On May 26, 1991, a Boeing 767 from the airline of former racing champion Niki Lauda crashed in Thai jungle shortly after its departure. The 223 people on board were killed. The thrust reverser had started unexpectedly. Boeing has had to recall all its 767 to modify their thrust reverser systems.
