1825 : Opening of the Erie Canal


On October 26, 1825, Governor Clinton of New York opened the Erie Canal, which allowed the connection between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson River. The canal now connects Albany to Buffalo and measures 584km. The channel allowed the rapid development of the Great Lakes region and the installation of settlers in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

1881 : Gunfight at the OK Corral


On October 26, 1881, a former police officer, Wyatt Earp, his brothers (town marshals), and Doc Holliday confronted the Clantons and McLaurys, thieves and murderers, in Tombstone, Arizona. The shooting lasted 30 seconds. Wyatt Earp was the only one to escape safely.

1944 : End of the Battle of Leyte Gulf


On October 26, 1944, one of the bloodiest battles of the second World War and one of the largest naval battles in history ended : the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Despite heavy losses, the Americans won a decisive victory against the Japanese. The Japanese fleet was decimated and Americans took control of the Pacific.

1994 : Signing of a peace treaty between Israel and Jordan


On October 26, 1994, Jordan and Israel signed a peace treaty near the border between the two countries to normalize relations between them. The Treaty was signed by the Prime Ministers of two countries: Abdelsalam al-Majali and Yitzhak Rabin under the watchful eye of President Clinton.

2001 : Patriot Act Signed


On October 26, 2001, U.S. President George W. Bush signed the Patriot Act giving sweeping powers to authorities in their fight against terrorism. The concept of terrorism was extended and the FBI obtained the right to access many personal details, which worried civil rights activists.
