1944 : Patton relieves Bastogne


The Belgian town of Bastogne, a strategic crossroads besieged by German troops and defended by the 101st Airborne Division is joined by Patton's 3rd Army, which had managed to cross the German lines with a bold strategy.

1955 : The opera Porgy & Bess is played in Leningrad


On December 26, 1955, George Gershwin's opera Porgy and Bess is played by an American company in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) during the Cold War. The opera tells the story of African Americans and is a monument of culture of the United States. The show was a big hit with Russians.

2003 : Earthquake in Iran


On December 26, 2003, an earthquake of moment magnitude 6.6 struck the city of Bam and the whole region of Kerman in Iran. More than 26,000 people were killed and more than 85% of the city were destroyed. The citadel of Bam, 2,500 years old and a World Heritage Site by Unesco, was destroyed.

2004 : South East Asia Tsunami


An earthquake of magnitude 9.1, off the coast of Sumatra caused a massive tsunami in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand and other countries in the region. Nearly 230,000 people in 13 countries lost their lives.
