1883 : Krakatoa explosion

On August 26, 1883, in the afternoon, several explosions occurred at Krakatoa, a small volcanic island, west of Sumatra in Indonesia, sending ashes more than 27 km high in the atmosphere. On August 27, 1883, at 10a.m., an enormous explosion, which was heard more than 4000 km away, occurred. This was the loudest noise ever heard in the human memory. During these two days, tsunamis with waves up to 46m high broke on the coast of Indonesia. 36,000 people were killed by the tsunamis and the pyroclastic flows. Temperature dropped across the planet and did not return to normal until 5 years later.
