1939 : Surrender of Poland


On September 27, 1939, Poland capitulated to Germany and 140,000 soldiers were taken prisoners. Nazi Germany began its program of killings, terror and displacement of hundreds of thousands of Poles to the east.

1959 : Vera hit the Japanese coast


On September 27, 1959, Typhoon Vera hit the shores of the Japanese island of Honshu with winds over 250 km/h. Over 5000 people were killed and nearly 40,000 were injured.

1993 : Sukhumi Massacre


On 27 September 1993, Abkhazian separatists, backed by their Russian and North Caucasian allies, broke the cease-fire and engaged in ethnic cleansing in the city of Sukhumi in Georgia. The massacre was of extreme violence and torture before the executions were horrific. 10,000 people were killed and 250,000 others displaced.

1996 : Julie N. crashes into the Million Dollar


September 27, 1996, the Liberian tanker Julie N. hit the Million Dollar Bridge in Portland, Maine and let out 700,000 liters of fuel in the Fore River estuary. The Million Dollar Bridge, built in 1916, had a width which was not adapted to super tankers. At the time of the accident, a new bridge, the Casco Bay Bridge, more modern, was under construction. The accident, although many of the chemicals was recovered, caused great damage to the flora and fauna.

2001 : Zug massacre


On September 27, 2001, a heavily armed man entered the parliament of the Canton of Zug and shot 91 times before killing himself. 14 people were killed and 18 others were injured. After the massacre, the security measures at government buildings, which were minimal so far, have been greatly strengthened and the people who had threatened the government and who possessed weapons have been overseen by the police.
