1904 : Inauguration of the New York subway


On October 27, 1904, the New York subway was inaugurated by the mayor, George McClellan. The New York subway quickly became one of the largest in the world. On the evening of the inauguration, 100,000 people paid a nickel and have a ride on the line. Today, the New York subway has 26 lines and 468 stations. It is open 24/24, seven days a week.

1962 : Plan to end the missile crisis


On October 27, 1962, the United States developed a plan to end the Cuban missile crisis. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev sent a letter on 26 to answer to the quarantine imposed on Cuba by the United States saying that the Soviet ships bringing food supplies would not carry any weapons if the U.S. promised not to invade Cuba. On 27, Khrushchev sent another letter offering to withdraw the missiles from Cuba if the U.S. did the same in Turkey. The Attorney General of the United States, Robert Kennedy proposed to his brother to respond positively to the first letter and to ignore the second while behind the scenes putting across Soviet diplomats that if the Russians withdrew their missiles, the United States would do the same.

1994 : The U.S. prison population exceeds one million


On October 27, 1994, a study showed that the U.S. prison population in state prisons and federal prisons, exceeded for the first time one million people. More than 500,000 people were also prisoners in local jails.

1995 : An avalanche buries a village in Iceland


On October 27, 1995, an avalanche covered the village of Flateyri in Iceland. 20 people were killed. An avalanche had already killed 16 people in another village in the region, Sudavik, on January 17, 1995. The two villages are located in an area with a high risk of avalanches.
