1904 : Inauguration of the New York subway


On October 27, 1904, the New York subway was inaugurated by the mayor, George McClellan. The New York subway quickly became one of the largest in the world. On the evening of the inauguration, 100,000 people paid a nickel and have a ride on the line. Today, the New York subway has 26 lines and 468 stations. It is open 24/24, seven days a week.

1962 : Plan to end the missile crisis


On October 27, 1962, the United States developed a plan to end the Cuban missile crisis. Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev sent a letter on 26 to answer to the quarantine imposed on Cuba by the United States saying that the Soviet ships bringing food supplies would not carry any weapons if the U.S. promised not to invade Cuba. 1995 : An avalanche buries a village in Iceland
