1975 : Accident in a mine in India


On December 27, 1975, a violent explosion, probably caused by a pocket of methane occured in the Chasnala Colliery coal mine in Dhanbad, India. Minors who were not killed by the explosion, were drowned by water and debris which fell on them following the rupture of a reservoir nearby. Between 370 and 700 minors (record-keeping of the mine was not very precise) were killed.

1978 : Spain becomes a democracy


On December 27, 1978, King Juan Carlos ratified the first democratic constitution in Spain for over 50 years. General Franco had appointed Juan Carlos as his successor. But when the dictator died, the king immediately made arrangements for the country to become a democracy.

1979 : Soviet Union invades Afghanistan


On December 27, 1979, the Soviet Union took control of Afghanistan, executed President Hafizullah Amin and replaced him with Babrak Karmal.

2007 : Assassination of Benazir Bhutto


On December 27, 2007, former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is assassinated in Rawalpindi in Pakistan while leaving an election rally.
