1986 : Swedish Prime Minister Killed


On 28 February 1986, the Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme was assassinated on a street in Stockholm. He has been an active opponent to the Vietnam War and the deployment of U.S. Pershing missiles in Europe. He was also a fervent opponent of the apartheid regime in South Africa.

1993 : Beginning of the siege in Waco, Texas


On February 28, 1993, a raid by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) who tried to apply a search warrant for illegal possession of weapons against a heavily armed religious group near Waco, Texas became a bloody shootout, killing at least four federal agents and six sect members and wounding at least 15 agents. A 51-day siege ensued and ended with the death of 76 cult members, suicided or killed by other members.

1997 : Earthquake in Iran


On February 28, 1997, an earthquake occurs in the region of Ardabil in Iran killing more than 1,000 people.

2010 : Severe storm Xynthia hits Europe


On February 28, 2010, the storm Xynthia lashed Spain, Portugal and France. 45 people were killed due to drowning in France.
