1939 : End of civil war in SpainOn March 28, 1939, Madrid fell to nationalist general Franco, which ended the civil war. It started in 1936 by a military coup by the nationalist against the Republicans ruling the country, who resisted for almost 3 years before surrendering. |

1969 : This anomaly must end"This anomaly must end". On 28 March 1969, the Greek poet Giorgos Seferis, Nobel Prize for Literature, made a statement to the BBC against the Colonels' regime, in power for two years after a coup. Copies of his declaration were sent to many Greek newspapers. |

1979 : Three Mile Island nuclear plantOn March 28, 1979, an accident occured at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. A cooling plant malfunction melted nearly half a reactor and radioactive steam escaped from the plant. The state of emergency was declared in the region and the public was informed, 5 hours later. |
