1914 : The Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife are assassinated in Sarajevo


On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand from Austria-Hungary and his wife Sophie were assassinated by a Bosnian Serb nationalist in Sarajevo. The event, due to the alliance agreements between states, led to the First World War.

1919 : Signature of the Treaty of Versailles


On June 28, 1919, the Treaty of Versailles was signed between Germany and the Allies and officially ended the First World War. The Treaty also created the League of Nations, the German colonial empire was shared among the Allies. The sanctions against Germany were very important and humiliating and caused resentment among the German people.

1992 : Earthquakes in California


On June 28, 1992, an earthquake of moment magnitude 7.3 hit Landers in California. It was the largest earthquake since the one that struck San Francisco in 1906. 3 hours later a second earthquake of moment magnitude 6.3 hit Big Bear, near Landers. As the area was sparsely populated, the damage was relatively minor.

1997 : Mike Tyson bites ear


On June 28, 1997, the American boxer Mike Tyson bit his opponent Evander Holyfield's ear during a match. After having spat out the piece of ear, it bit the other ear of his opponent. He was disqualified and suspended. This was the end of his tumultuous career.

Sex on the Beach cocktail


The Sex on the beach is a popular cocktail mainly in the summer on the beach where the fruity taste is consistent with the festive atmosphere of the seashore
Preparation:
Put ice cubes in a tall glass.
Add, in that order, 4cl vodka, 4cl peach schnapps, 6cl orange juice, 6cl cranberry juice.
We may add a half slice of pineapple and a cocktail umbrella to decorate the glass.
Avoid mixing at that time : observing the mixing of fruit juice is one of the appeals of the cocktail.
Drink in moderation and never before driving.
