1886 : Statue of Liberty inaugurated


On October 28, 1886, U.S. President Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty on Bedloe's Island in New York. Bartholdi's statue, a gift from France, had arrived dismantled in June 1885.

1940 : Italy invaded Greece


On October 28, 1940, Mussolini's troops invaded Greece, against the advice of Hitler, who wanted Italy to stayed focused on Egypt. Due to a very bad preparation, a non conducive period, a rugged and strong determination from the Greek troops, the Italians were pushed back in Albania in just one week.

1962 : End of the missile crisis in Cuba


On October 28, 1962, Nikita Khrushchev agreed to withdraw Soviet missiles from Cuba in exchange for a promise that the United States would respect the sovereignty of Cuba. The hard-line in the Soviet Communist Party did not forgive the withdrawal and 2 years later, a conspiracy led by Leonid Brezhnev "resigned" Khrushchev.

1982 : The Spanish Socialist Workers Party wins parliamentary elections in Spain


On October 28, 1982, the Spanish Socialist Workers Party won the general election in Spain, seven years after the end of Francoism. It remained over 13 years in power.

1995 : Metro fire in Baku


On October 28, 1995, a fire broke out in the metro in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. 289 people were killed, most by breathing carbon monoxide in the train where they were. The fire was probably caused by an electrical fault but the exact cause is still unknown.

2009 : Car bombing in Peshawar


On October 28, 2009, a car bomb killed 137 people in Peshawar, Pakistan. The government accuses the Taliban of having carried out the attack but they have always denied to be the instigators.
