1949 : The Soviets detonated an atomic bomb


On August 29, 1949, the Soviet Union successfully detonated its first atomic bomb in Kazakhstan. The Soviets had received information from a German-born American physicist, Klaus Fuchs. In response, the Americans developed the H-bomb.

1997 : Rais massacre


On the night of August 29, 1997, members of the GIA, Armed Islamic Group, attacked the village of Rais in the south of Algiers, killing men, women, children and animals with the utmost savagery. Officially, the government reported 238 dead. Other reports cited the number of 800 deaths. And about 20 joung women were abducted.

2003 : Attack in a mosque in Najaf


On August 29, 2003, a bomb exploded near a mosque in the holy city of Najaf. 80 people were killed - including a Shiite leader, Ayatollah Sayed Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim - and 100 injured.

2005 : Katrina hit the coast of Louisiana


On August 29, 2005, Category 4 Hurricane Katrina hit the coast of Louisiana near New Orleans. It destroyed infrastructure and houses and when the storm surges passed over the levees protecting the city, New Orleans was flooded. People who were not evacuated found themselves in very difficult conditions on rooftops or in makeshift shelters. Over 1300 people were killed by the cyclone and many were assaulted on the roofs. Damage totaled $150 billion and many areas were not rebuilt.
