1787 : First performance of Don Giovanni


On October 29, 1787, Mozart's opera Don Giovanni was played for the first time in the Prague Italian opera, Teatro di Praga (now the Estates Theatre).

1929 : Black Tuesday hits Wall Street


On October 29, 1929, after several days of panic, the crash of this Black Tuesday was even more important, the actions slumped into their lowest value and the market collapsed completely. After that day, the shares could only go up but the economy collpased and between 1929 and 1933, half of the banks failed.

1956 : Israel invaded Egypt


On October 29, 1956, Israel, joined by the United Kingdom and France, invaded Egypt. The Egyptian leader Gamal Abdel Nasser had decided the nationalization of the Suez Canal in July 1956 in order to finance the Aswan Dam.
The Soviet Union threatened to come to Egypt to support Nasser. Eisenhower asked the Russians not to intervene and put pressure on the three aggressor countries to withdraw their troops, which is what they did in late 1956, early 1957.

1960 : Cassius Clay beats the police chief of Fayetteville


On October 29, 1960, in Louisville, Kentucky, boxer Cassius Clay, later to become Muhammad Ali, won his first fight as a professional against Tunney Hunsaker, police chief of Fayetteville, West Virginia.

1999 : Orissa cyclone hit India and Myanmar
