1948 : Assassination of Gandhi


On January 30, 1948, Mahatma Gandhi is assassinated by an extremist belonging to a right-wing Hindu militia group who did not appreciate the desire for peace, especially with the newly created Pakistan, of the pacifist leader.

1972 : Bloody Sunday


On January 30, 1972, the British army opened fire on unarmed demonstrators for civil rights as well as bystanders in Derry in Northern Ireland. 14 people were killed. U2 commemorated the incident in 1983 in their song "Sunday Bloody Sunday".

2000 : Crash of an Airbus A-310 off the Ivory Coast


On January 30, 2000, in the evening, a Kenya Airways Airbus A-310, crashed in the Atlantic Ocean shortly after takeoff from the Ivory Coast. Rescuers could not intervene until the morning but saved only 10 people. 169 people were killed. The majority of drowning.
