1789 : George Washington takes office


On 30 April 1789, the first U.S. President, George Washington took office in New York. He was elected unanimously on March 4th.

1943 : The Man Who Never Was


On April 30, 1943, the British launched Operation Mincemeat which consisted of pushing a corpse into the sea near the coast held by the Germans with a briefcase containing fake invasion plans. The operation was a success.

1945 : Hitler killed himself


On April 30, 1945, Hitler and Eva Braun, whom he had just married, commit suicide in their bunker in Berlin as Russian troops were about to enter.

1973 : Watergate scandal


On April 30, 1973, following investigations in the Watergate scandal, the closest associates of U.S. President Richard Nixon's, Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs Ehrlichman, White House Chief of Staff Haldeman and Attorney General Kleindienst, had to resign.
White House Counsel John Dean was fired because he went on to testify against his comrades before the Senate committee.

1975 : Fall of Saigon


On April 30, 1975, North Vietnamese troops and Viet Cong took the city of Saigon and broke down the South Vietnamese government. Then came the begining of talks that led to the reunification of the country.

2009 : Chrysler filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy


The carmaker company Chrysler filed for the implementation of Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code, which allows a bankrupt company tobe protected from its creditors and reorganize itself in order to place financial arrangements to enable it to continue its activity.

Reunification Day in Vietnam
On 30 April, in Vietnam, we celebrate the reunification of the country which began on April 30, 1975 when North Vietnamese troops took the city of Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City).
Children's Day in Mexico
April 30 is Children's Day (El Día del Niño) in Mexico. That day is inspired by Children's Day wanted by the UNICEF to promote brotherhood and understanding of the world's children between them.
Young Mexicans receive a gift from their parents. They can also bring to the attention of the government issues that affect them.
Walpurgis Night
The night from April 30 to May 1 is the Night of Walpurgis in Eastern and Northern Europe. In France it is celebrated mainly in the north-east.
This night, we light bonfires and everyone is dancing in the streets to celebrate the end of winter. In some locations, people disguise as witches to remember the meetings of sorcerers and witches which, according to legend, took place that night.
