1916 : Explosion on Black Tom Island in New York


On July 30, 1916, a series of explosions occurred on Black Tom Island, close to Liberty Island (the island of the Statue of Liberty). Black Tom Island was used as a shipment depot for the equipment to send to the Allies in Europe. The attack was perpetrated by German agents. It was so important that debris were projected over a mile and was even felt in Philadelphia. 7 people were killed and many injured. The windows exploded for miles around and the Statue of Liberty was damaged.

1966 : England won the World Cup Football


On July 30, 1966, England won the World Cup Football 4-2 against West Germany at Wembley Stadium.

1971 : Collision between a fighter jet and a Boeing in Japan


On July 30, 1971, a F-86 Sabre from Japanese air force collided with a Boeing 727 over Japan. The pilot ejected from the jet but the 162 people aboard the airliner were killed. The pilot of the jet was flying alongside the jet of his instructor, had only a few hours of flying experience and none of the two jets was equipped with radar.

1975 : Begoinning of the Helsinki Summit


On July 30, 1975, the United States, Canada, the Soviet Union and almost all European countries met in Helsinki to discuss policy ofdetente between two blocs of countries.
