1945 : General MacArthur arrived in Japan


On August 30, 1945, General MacArthur arrived in Japan to receive the surrender of the Japanese government and to reorganize the country.

1963 : The hot line becomes operational


August 30, 1963, the hot line, the hotline between Washington and Moscow was installed. It was intended to improve communication and speed of connection between the authorities of the two States. In Washington, the line was installed in the Pentagon (not in the White House) and in Moscow, it was installed in the Kremlin. The line became very popular in Cold War movies. It was replaced by a direct secure line in 1999.

1974 : A train derailed into Zagreb station


On August 30, 1974, a crowded train, from Belgrade to Dortmund, launched at full speed and which went through a red light, derailed on reaching the station of Zagreb in Yugoslavia. 153 people were killed in the disaster. Both engineers, who did not respect the signs, due to falling asleep or being drunk, were sentenced to 15 and 8 years in prison.

1984 : Maiden Flight of Space Shuttle Discovery


On August 30, 1984, the shuttle Discovery made its first trip into space and was launched from Florida. Its mission lasted 6 days during which it deplyed three communications satellites. Its last trip took place on March 9, 2011.

2009 : Japanese Elections


On August 30, 2009, Japanese parliamentary elections were won by the Democratic Party after 48 years of rule by the Liberal Democrat Party.
