1938 : Orson Welles caused panic


On October 30, 1938, at 8 pm, young Orson Welles began his adaptation of War of the Worlds by HG Wells on CBS radio. His narrative of the invasion of Martians, with sound effects and actors, was so convincing that nearly a million listeners believed the story and panic spread in the country.

1975 : Juan Carlos became head of the Spanish State


On October 30, 1975, Prince Juan Carlos became the head of Spanish state when the dictator Franco, who had been ruling the country since 1936, admited he was too ill to continue. On November 22, Juan Carlos was crowned king, just after Franco's death, whom he was the designated successor. However, the new king immediately chose a transition to democracy.

1991 : The perfect storm hits the coast of New England and Canada


On October 30, 1991, a storm, born of the encounter between Hurricane Grace from Bermuda and a low pressure system from Canada, hit the coasts of New England and Canada. The storm, dubbed the 1991 Halloween storm or the perfect storm, caused waves up to 30 m in the ocean and heavy flooding inland.
A fishing boat disappeared in the exceptional strong storm. This fact inspired a book by Sebastian Junger, which became a bestseller and which was adapted in a film with George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg.

1995 : Referendum on Quebec sovereignty


On October 30, 1995, a referendum on the secession of Quebec was lost of little by the separatists : 49.42% against 50.58%. Quebec remained in Canada.
