1874 : Birth of Winston Churchill


On November 30, 1874, Winston Churchill, a man with an incredibly busy life, was born. He began his adult life with a military career in India, Sudan and South Africa, before entering politics and starting a literary career. During World War I, he was part of government until the Dardanelles disaster. Then he led a battalion on the front in France before returning to the government. After a period when he was a bit left out, he was called back in 1939 as First Lord of the Admiralty, then Prime Minister in 1940. The British people had to stand alone against Nazi Germany and Churchill promised them that he would never surrender. He then succeeded to convince Roosevelt and Stalin to join him. The Conservative Party lost the elections at the end of the war, but Churchill became Prime Minister again in 1951 and remained so until 1955. He then remained in politics while engaged in his literary career and even won a Nobel Prize in Literature.

1939 : USSR invades Finland


On November 30, 1939, 465,000 Soviet troops invaded Finland. The Soviet Union believed that the attack would be easy. However, in fact, the Finnish resistance was very strong even if it did not have great resources. Finland still had to negotiate with the Soviet Union from March 1940.

1950 : Truman wants to nuke Korea


On November 30, 1947, U.S. President Truman said he was prepared to use the atomic bomb against Korea if necessary.

1979 : Release of The Wall


On November 30, 1979, Pink Floyd released their fourth album: The Wall. Its flagship title, Another Brick in the Wall, became No. 1 worldwide.

1994 : The Achille Lauro sank off the coast of Africa


On 30 November 1994, the cruise ship, the Achille Lauro, belonging to the StarLauro company and carrying 1,000 passengers, sank off the coast of Somalia. A fire had broken out on board. Passengers were evacuated in lifeboats. A tug arrived to bring her back to the nearest port when a strong explosion occurred, killing two people and sinking the ship. The Achille Lauro had already made the headlines in 1971 when she sank an Italian fishing boat in the Mediterranean and in 1985, when she was hijacked by Palestinian terrorists.
