1926 : Death of Houdini


On October 31, 1926, the great magician Harry Houdini died of peritonitis. His appendix had burst when he was hit by a student during a demonstration of the strength of his muscles. He revolutionized magic by his exceptional escapes.

1956 : The British and French arrived in Suez


On October 31, 1956, two days after the sending of Israeli forces in Egypt to regain the Suez Canal, nationalized by President Nasser to finance the construction of the Aswan Dam, the British and French troops arrived in the area. In response, the Soviets wanted to enter into the conflict. However, Eisenhower firmly asked them to stay out of the conflict while he threatened France, the UK and Israel from economic sanctions if they did not withdraw. Measurements of the U.S. President were very effective even if they damaged their relationships with all stakeholders.

1961 : Hurricane Hattie strikes Belize


On October 31, 1961, Hurricane Hattie strucked Belize City area. 400 people were killed and half the city was destroyed.

1961 : Stalin's body removed from Lenin's Tomb


On October 31, 1961, Stalin's body was removed from Lenin's tomb on Red Square in Moscow. On the death of Stalin, due to the victory against the Germans during WW2, his body was placed in the mausoleum. Nevertheless, the following years, the Soviet leaders unanimously condemned the atrocities committed while he ruled the country.

1984 : Indira Ganghi assassinée


On October 31, 1984, Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards, Beant Singh and Satwant Singh in New Delhi. Her death was a reprisal for her order to attack a Sikh temple in Punjab in order to dislodge armed sikh extremists in june 1984.
