DESCRIPTION

Very close to the city of Toulon, La Garde is a good balance between city and village in Provence. The old village was built on a volcanic rock, which was used during the Antiquity as a lookout post.

HISTORY

The town was mentioned for the first time in 1056. At this time, it surrounded the castle of the bishops of Toulon. In the Middle Ages, the city suffered many invasions and religion wars. It then took the name of La Garde-les-Toulon.

During the Revolution, the castle was destroyed and the rock used as a quarry. What is left today of that time is the Roman chapel and a corner tower.

ENTERTAINMENT / LEISURE

The city hosted numerous artists during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including the poet and writer Jean Aicard and the painter Dieudonne Jacobs. La Garde remembers its artistic past and highlights it with the opening of the G Gallery in 2001 and with important events for the world of contemporary art, as "Le Rendez Vous des Jeunes Plasticiens" which has been held annually since 1987.

The music is also valued because every year in August, La Garde organizes the festival Kality Street, a dynamic encounter between many musical styles. The welcomed artists are some young talents from the Var and some nationally renowned artists.
