Located 90 km from the sea, the town of Saint-Etienne de Tinée offers landscapes of mountain wilderness. Built on the banks of a river at the bottom of a beautiful sunny valley, Saint-Etienne de Tinée is a dynamic village which has a remarkable heritage.

Auron :

On the territory of the municipality lies the Auron ski resort, known for its many trails and mountain activities proposed therein. From the village, chairlift Pinatelle allows vacationers to reach the ski resort and its peaks approaching 3000 meters.

Nature :

Hiking enthusiasts will be delighted by the Natural Heritage in Saint-Etienne de Tinée. Indeed, one can admire numerous mountain lakes, waterfalls and lakes Vens, the Energy path, the Tenibre mountain and the Fer pass (between 2500 and 3000 meters high), not to mention the beautiful scenery of the Parc du Mercantour. And with a little luck, you will meet marmots, chamois and ibex.

Not far from Saint-Etienne de Tinée, is the Col de la Bonnette which is one of the highest roads in Europe. From up there, you will discover a unique landscape, almost lunar with on one side the Tinée valley and on the other side the Ubaye valley.

Unfortunately, Saint-Etienne de Tinée is a threatened village because it is close to the landslide of Clapière, the largest in Europe. If the collapse of the unstable mass of Clapière were to happen, the Tinée river would be blocked and would create a dam and flood the village of Saint-Etienne. This natural phenomenon is monitored and in case of an incident, the valley and its villages would be quickly evacuated.

The village :

The village itself also has many surprises, mostly focused on the architectural heritage. Standing on the main square, the baroque church dedicated to Saint Etienne , recently renovated and repainted in yellow gold has a bell choir of the fourteenth century.

Partly rebuilt after a fire in the '30s, Saint-Etienne has a few covered walkways, fountains and facades in pastel colors, that we discover along fresh alleyways.

Several trompe-l'oeil frescoes and sundials can be discovered in the village .
