1933 : Beginning of the persecution of Jews in Germany On 1 April 1933, Nazi Germany begins persecution of Jews by declaring a boycott of Jewish owned businesses.
1946 : Earthquake and Tsunami in the Aleutian Islands On 1 April 1946, an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occured in the Aleutian Islands. A tsunami then spread in all the pacific ocean and created waves over 18 meters at the Hawaii Islands. It was after this catastrophe that the U.S. established a warning system against tsunamis in the Pacific.
1957 : BBC hoax On 1 April 1957, on its Panorama programme, the BBC created a story on the spaghetti harvest in the trees and their drying, in Switzerland.
1970 : Prohibition of cigarette advertising in the U.S. On 1 April 1970, Richard Nixon, U.S. President signed the law banning cigarette advertising on radio and television.
