1783 : Washington returned to civilian life

On December 4, 1783, George Washington announced to the officers under his command that he resigned. Washington led the troops of the American Continental Army against the British until the final victory in 1781 and then to the Treaty of Paris of 1783, recognizing the independence of the United States. He returned to civilian life at his home in Mount Vernon, Virginia. He was called back in 1789 to become the first U.S. President.

1952 : Smog kills thousands of people in London

On December 4, 1952, while a high pressure system immobilized the air above the Thames, a cold snap came from the west, increasing the use of coal for heating. The cloud of soot and sulfur dioxide, due to pollution from industries, vehicles and private consumption, reached such a level that the visibility was almost zero. During four days, until its dissipation on December 9, smog caused accidents of trains and of cars, and numerous respiratory distress. At least 12000 people were killed.

1991 : Release of Terry Anderson

On December 4, 1991, the American hostage in Lebanon, Terry Anderson, is released. The journalist had been kidnapped on March 16, 1985 by Hezbollah. Hezbollah launched a campaign of kidnappings of Westerners in the wake of attacks on French and American military bases and embassies in 1982 and 1983 to avoid reprisals.

1992 : U.S. troops in Somalia

On December 4, 1992, President Bush ordered 28,000 U.S. troops to Somalia to help distribute humanitarian aid diverted by military groups as the country was in civil war. 1 million people suffered from famine. The troops stayed 15 months and despite their will - and some disastrous operations - no improvement was made in the resolution of the civil war. They were gradually replaced by United Nations troops from May 1993 who stayed until 1995. The civil war continues, nearly 20 years later.
