1836 : Battle of San Jacinto


On April 21, 1836, U.S. troops Sam Houston defeated the Mexican troops of General Santa Anna, opening the door to Texas independence.
American Texans rebelled against the abolition of slavery then against the U.S. Immigration prohibition and finally against centralization and the increasing authoritarianism of the Mexican government.

On April 21, 1989, 100,000 students gathered in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China on the eve of the funeral of the chief reformers Hu Yaobang, to protest against the authoritarian policies of government.
